Steve Austin and his partner, Zachary Stass, run this lovely guesthouse (and its downstairs coffee bar, Brewbar) in a wonderful West Village neighborhood. Both men have an eye for style and take the guesthouse business seriously, and their commitment shows--the Abingdon is beautifully outfitted and professionally run. All the rooms are done in bold colors and equipped with well-chosen art and furnishings; each can be previewed on their Web site, so choose the one that best fits your personal style and budget. I suggest opting for one with a new bathroom (theyre large and well done). But no matter which one you choose, youll get a superior-quality mattress and linens, a hair dryer, soft polyfleece bathrobes, an alarm, a small TV, and a telephone with your own answering machine (a splitter can be provided for your laptop); five rooms also have ceiling fans. The best (and most expensive) is the Ambassador Room, which has a witty British Raj theme and a kitchenette (with microwave), VCR, and sleeper sofa for a third person.
The neighborhood is terrific, especially for those who want to be close to good restaurants and boutiques, but its a bit off the beaten path if youre planning on lots of Midtown sightseeing. And the Abingdon is best for mature, independent-minded travelers since theres no regular staff on-site. No smoking.
